Shared Research

As you have seen in our presentation sessions, it is a good idea to share information with others when you are in the planning stage. You can receive feedback and discuss issues with your work in a constructive way. I invite you to share what's going on with your research topic and issues associated with it. Your classmates can then volunteer information you may not have even considered yet. It could take your work in an entirely unique direction!

  1. My research project is going very well. I have gotten most of my sources from the library page on myredragon. They have a lot of great databases that were very helpful in finding information on my topic about Having elderly drivers renew and retest for their licenses every five years after a certain age. I present on Friday and made index cards for each of the points I need to talk and discuss. My three reasons that people should have to do this is because of poor vision, slow reaction time, and forgotten rules of the road or not adjusted to changes made on the road. I found information for all my reasons so I will begin doing my paper pretty soon!

  2. My paper is on a topic that has seen much debate, going back even a thousand years. I am very much into politics and policy making, hence why I am a Political science major. Throughout the years, I have been witnessing and questioning a lot about the concept of religion. Before there are any prejudgments, I am not an atheist, I am a confirmed catholic. I consider myself to be spiritual and religious. What makes me unique is the fact that I think all religions are the same, and I do not value one over the other. My paper is about the hypocrisy of organized religion. I want people to not stop believing in religion by accept all of them and come to the conclusion that religion is nothing more than what one makes it!

  3. My topic is tattoos and body piercing in the work place. There has been much controversy on this topic, especially in the last few years. With the percents quickly increasing, more and more people are piercing and inking their skin, much more than ever before. Many workplaces are requiring employees to cover all tattoos and remove certain piercing to maintain a clean environment in the workplace. Dress codes and appearance policies can be legally enforced by employers in the workplace as long as they do not discriminate on race, color, religion, age, national origin or gender, according to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. So the question is posed, should these employees be able to show their body art, or be asked to cover it up.
I personally support the covering up of body are and removal of piercings in white collar business professional jobs throughout this essay. I also talk about the possibility of a more local job if self expression is desired, as these employers have been more lenient in recent years. My counter argument is that some people may have something else to bring to the workplace with their body art, self expression may be helpful. I also talk about freedom of expression.

If anyone has anything they think I should discuss in my paper please let me know! I'm sure all of you have some opinion on this topic as it is our generation being affected by it. I could use all of your ideas!

  4. My research project is charter schools vs. public schools. There is an immense debate amongst individuals as to the way in which people should be educated. I have found several books that discuss these issues that exist and will include them in my essay. I still need to find more quotes to support my research. My thesis statement would be the success of a well- developed and run charter school will produce competition amongst public schools because charter schools give families different options for public education, because charter schools are immediately accountable if they are not educating their students the proper way, and lastly because public school system struggle with competition amongst each other which will help encourage schools to reevaluate their methods of teaching. So far I am on the right track but have some more work to still do to improve my paper.

  5. My argument is about the legalization of marijuana. This debate has been going on for many years now and there are many solid arguments to make it legal, including my three reasons: it has multiple medical and health benefits, it will reduce crime rate and overcrowding in prisons, and it will improve the economy. I have many quotes from things ranging from databases, college professors, police officers, books, etc. I do need some help finding a solid counter argument, though. I have one now and it that many people consider marijuana to be a gateway drug, and I have a source and quote for that, but I feel that I need a stronger argument, one that does not relate to or compare to alcohol or cigarettes and that they are more dangerous to one's health, it has to be about marijuana only. However, other than that I am doing very well and I am confident with all of my reasons.

  6. I decided to write my research paper about United States immigration laws, which has been a very controversial topic since the World Trade Center attack on September 11, 2001. I focused on how some Americans believe that all immigrants are bad because of the fact that criminal immigrants give legal immigrants a bad name. Through two books, two databases, and two websites, I argue that the United States should not close its borders to legal immigrants for three reasons. These reasons are that legal immigrants pay taxes like all other American citizens, legal immigrants are beneficial to society in many ways, and that preventing immigrant students from entering the country would be harmful in the future. My counter argument is that many people say that immigrants lead to a rise in the crime rate, which makes sense because statistics say that a high percentage of inmates are immigrants. I refute this by explaining that many things affect the crime rate, so blaming it on immigrants is unfair, and that these statistics can be created or manipulated so that Americans see the results as the researchers want them to be seen. This topic has always been very interesting to me, and researching it strengthened my views. As I review my paper, I am becoming more confident that it is well-written. If anyone has suggestions, please let me know. Thank you!

  7. My research topic has come along very smoothly. I believe that I have incorporated numerous sources and supporting details to back up my thesis statement about the harmfulness of tobacco products. Throughout my essay, I will be connecting to the harmful effects that tobacco products can cause on an individual as well as those surrounding the smoker. Second hand smoke is as much a threat as directly using tobacco products. My counterarguement includes the new idea of smokeless cigarettes that include none of the harmful cancer causing products yet still give you the sense of smoking a cigarette. Any suggestions would be great.

  8. My argument is on homosexuality, which can become a very heated topic. In my thesis I state why homosexuals should be given equal human rights in many different things, including getting married and raising a family. I am not overly confident in my paper yet, but I have done a lot of reading and research to be able to put it together.
I am also debating using some references that have to do with conversations that have taken place in a SUNY Cortland club- Spectrum which is the gay straight alliance on campus.
If anyone has any suggestions that you think I should discuss or add to my paper please let me know i'm always up for some suggestions, because I do know that it is a very heated topic and everyone definitely has a different opinion on this! Wheither you are for or against the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) community getting equal rights suggestions are helpful because if you are against it can definitely make my opposition stronger. Thanks!
If anyone has anything they think I should discuss in my paper please let me know! I'm sure all of you have some opinion on this topic as it is our generation being affected by it. I could use all of your ideas!

  9. I am writing my research paper on Prostitution and how it should not be legalized because it will have negative impact on poor women and children worldwide. My reasons are: they will be trafficked, they may be raped and face violence, and they may experience health problems such as diseases and physical and emotional problems. I have foubnd good sources to support my reasons and my counter argument will be prostitution should be legalized because some people believe it will help control these problems and make it safer.I argued against it by saying that prostitution should remain illegal but the government has to enforce the laws and provide more help by hot-lines or counseling for those who seek help.
If anyone has better suggestions on how to write my thesis or counter argument or other sources I could use please let me know

  10. My topic is on steroids and its negative affects on people. I am finding my topic quite interesting for many different reasons one is because it involves sports, the other is because I am learning about something that may alter the body. In the beginning I had trouble using the data base, but now it isn't a hard task. I believe using the outline was a tremendous help, and the only thing I may need help on is citing

  11. My topic is Immigration and exaplins how we should have more strick borders. This is a very heated topic because some claim that immigrants are good for the country because they can do jobs that Americans do not want to do and bcause they bring diversity to the United States. I believe that immigrants cause Americans to pay more in taxes, over population, increased crime, and a decrease in job availability. I am gathering facts and information from two books, two websites and two databases. This is a very interesting topic and is highly debated today so writing this papaer hasnt been as bad as I thought. If you have any suggestions let me know. Thanks

  12. My topic is about brain injuries resulting from sports. Many people do not see the dangers in what getting a head injury can do to a person in the future. Many people think that they are at the same risk as athletes and dont see how severe it is when someone gets their head slammed into the ground when they are playing football. There are many athletes at Cortland and everyone should know the severity of getting a concussion when you play sports.

  13. My topic is about the controversy over Mac's and Windows. Many people think that Windows computers are better than Mac's for their pricing and quality, and my argument is that those individuals are wrong. I am using many types of details about Mac and comparing them to Windows, such as the virus issue on windows, etc. The issues that many people come up with usually all lead to pricing and quality of what you are buying. Every single person who argues that windows is better always says because windows is cheaper. Which when looking at the data I have discovered using many journal articles proves otherwise.

  14. My topic is on the BCS system in college football. I think it should be replaced by a playoff system. The BCS has had many controversies since it was created in 1998. The biggest of them was that in 2004, there were two national champions; only one of them actually played in the title game. It doesn't make sense there would ever be two national champions declared at the end of the season. Also, the teams picked for the BCS bowl games aren't always the best teams. Last season, UCONN was in one of the games and they were never even ranked in the top 25 in any poll. There has also been controversy over the BCS system's legality. A few congressmen pointed out that the teams in major conferences are the only ones having the opportunity to play in these games, which means they're producing much more revenue. Therefore, the system is restricting financial opportunities from schools in mid-major conferences. A playoff system is what most fans want to see, anyways. USA Today took a poll, and a strong majority would prefer to see a playoff system over the current BCS.

  15. My topic is the legalization of marijuana. This debate has been going on for a very long time throughout U.S. history. My argument is that marijuana can help the country through medical purposes, financial purposes, and also it can help keep innocent non violent people out of already over crowded jails. Many people believe that marijuana is bad but many have never tried it mostly because it is an illegal drug. Also, marijuana is not a gateway drug like many perceive it to be. My project is going well and my only concern is with the APA format of citation.

  16. My research argument is on the legalization of same-sex marriage in America, which has become an increasingly popular debate. Most of my sources were taken from the databases on the library tab of myreddragon. I'm having some trouble with my primary source and incorporating it into all of my reasons, but other than that it seems to be coming along smoothly.

  17. My research paper topic is on childhood obesity. Childhood obesity has become an epidemic in America and the rates of overweight children has tripled in the last three decades. There are many controversies surrounding this topic but I have chosen to write on how parents, schools, and communities can help fix this problem and decrease the amount of obese children in America. My paper introduction starts out with an introduction of the topic and I will give a few statistics on childhood obesity. In my body paragraphs I talk about my three reasons which are how parents, schools, and communities need to promote healthy eating habits to children, help children become more physically active, and educating children and their families about healthy lifestyles. I have six sources that I am using to support my reasons and I believe that my paper has come together nicely. If anyone has any comments or suggestions please let me know. Thanks

  18. I chose to write my paper on the legalization of marijuana and my argument is that it should be legal. The legalization of marijuana has been a very controversial topic for many years and people continue to have their opinions. My paper is coming along, but I am having trouble with my primary source. I have used a few books and many online websites but few databases. Other than that, I have good synthesis and reasoning behind all my statements.

  19. My paper is about the No Child Left Behind Act which was written in order to improve school and teaching performance. My paper argues that even though it set up many goals to help increase education, it has failed to do so. My three reasons are: it does not provide services for minority schools, it does not take into account personal struggles, such as having problems at home or having a learning disability, and it does not provide testing that accurately measures a student's peformance. Each reason is supported by information that I got from two books from the library and many different databases that I found on the school's library website. I also have evidence to back up my counter-argument as well. If there are any suggestions please let me know.

  20. My paper is about racial profiling and its effects on individuals of Mexican, Muslim and African-American descent. The part in which I am struggling most with is finding recent evidence in the case of African American's being racially profiled because racial profiling court cases generally occurred with them before the year 2000. I have no problem finding evidence on the other two races as they have been more recently on trial for these specific things.

  21. My research paper topic is on Budget Cuts in Education.I am finding a lot of information on this topic which is actually making it difficult to narrow down my choices. There are several different areas I can touch upon.I chose to focus my research on how budget cuts affect sports programs or any extracurricular activities.I also discussed how students are being denied many of the classes they will need to gain acceptance to colleges or universities they wish to attend. The last topic discussed was how class size is continuing to increase which has a direct effect on the students success in academics. There were actual studies that were done on the effect of class size on academic achievement .The main subject I focused on was how budget cuts are limiting students and not allowing them to get the most out of their education.

  22. My research paper is on gay rights and the legalization of gay marriage throughout the entire United States. This has been a large controversy for a very long time and I feel that people should be able to do what they want in life. The main point I am trying to get across is that US citizens are born with unalienable rights in which can not be taken from them. I personally feel that denying people with the right to same-sex marriage,is basically taking their granted rights away. I am using many resources from the SUNY Cortland library and plan to be pro marriage as my argument for the paper.

  23. My research paper is about the legalization of marijuana. I find it hard to write a paper on a drug and not feel as if my peers are judging me. Solely because one's belief tend more towards a liberal perspective doesn’t mean I myself smoke. I have a majority of my sources already compiled and charts made for connecting thoughts and counter arguments. I would just as if anyone had any advice for making my paper be respected as a well researched topic paper it is, instead of just a stoner paper.

  24. For my research paper, I am taking the side and agreeing with the new concussion policy in the National Hockey League. Even if people who do not watch sports often do not recognize, concussions in sports is becoming a huge epidemic, especially in hockey. The league is trying to cut down on the amount of hits they are having that cause concussions by having stricter suspensions for illegal hits. They also adopted a better policy to check for concussions, to make sure that players who have them to not get back into game action until they are 100 percent healthy.

  25. For my research paper, I chose to write about why lowering the drinking age would be very beneficial. I also feel that my topic is very interesting, especially to college students since it has to do with our age range. Right now there are many vehicle accidents, and binge drinking accidents that i chose to make my thesis the drinking age should be lowered to eighteen because the current law will help reduce binge drinking, create safer drinking environments, and will promote more social drinking. A lot of my sources came from the library databases and books. The library presentation that was given to us really helped me out.

  26. My topic is on the acceptance of tattoos and piercings in the workplace. This is a very controversial topic because as the number of people who have piercings and tattoos increases, the issue of accepting them becomes more intense. I am taking the position of supporting acceptance of tattoos and piercings in the workplace. All American citizens have the freedom of expression and should be able to freely display their body modifications at the workplace, as long as it does not offend any individuals. People are able to wear different hairstyles, haircuts, make-up...why should they have to cover up their body artwork? The number of people who have either a tattoo or piercing, or both, is greatly increasing. They are becoming more socially accepted. Several different employments are allowing the display of piercings and tattoos, as long as they don't cause any dangers in the workplace and do not offend any individual, receiving any negative comments. I was able to find a lot of reliable sources and information to support my argument. There were several different books to choose from the library. The sources I found most useful were the databases on the library tab of myredragon. I was able to search for several different articles people wrote based on my issue. Even though I found plenty of information to support my argument, I would greatly appreciate anyone's advice and input on the topic.

  27. For my research paper, I am writing about single-sex education. My paper will be explaining and support the benefits that single-sex education brings. The three reason that will be support my thesis are single-sex eduction improves the academic achievements of the students, helps the social lives of the students, and it can can break down gender stereotypes. I was able to find a lot of source on the library database and I was also able to find a book in the library, which is my primary source. I am also going to use some websites that I found online as a couple of my sources. Overall, my research paper is coming along and I found the library webpage very helpful as I was in the processes of looking for sources.

  28. For my research paper I am comparing the Harry Potter book series and the Twilight book series. My paper is going very well. I have found lots of examples on the pros and cons for both series'. I am writing that Harry Potter is better. My reasons for this is how in-depth the wizarding world is, the influence that the books have had, the responses to Breaking Dawn and the Deathly Hallows, and the use of historical and mythological references. I use examples from the books and refer to things such as quidditch being a college sport, an interview with a fan of both books to get my point across and book reviews and articles. I believe I am doing a good job so far on my paper but an advice would be appreciated.

  29. I chose to write about the idea of implementing a comprehensive sexual education program into schools. I feel as though this would be very beneficial in lowering the teen pregnancy rate, lowering the rate of HIV and other STD's and also give kids the authority to make their own decisions. My last reason mainly has to do with giving adolescents the freedom to make up their minds, and giving them a range of ideas about sex so they can make their own informed decisions. It is also about helping parents talk to their kids, because most children don't get the "birds and the bees" speech when they're young. Today, kids learn their information about sex from the most random places; whether it be from other kids, the media, or lies they are told. If an older mentor doesn't speak to them before they become sexually active, these falsities about sex can have terrible outcomes such as getting pregnant or contracting an STD. The only sensible way to prevent this is to have the federal government set up a system that enforces the rule that sexual education must be taught in all schools across the United States.

  30. For my research paper I am also talking about implementing comprehensive sex education into school curriculum. I am going to talk about how the conservatives and liberals have been arguing about this issue since the 1960's. I will also be talking about how comprehensive sex education programs lead to fewer girls getting pregnant each year and fewer teens contracting STI's. Comprehensive sex education also leads to safer sex practices, the use of contraception, and condom use. Many parents think sex education should be taught in the home because some of the material is not age-appropriate for the grades that are learning about it. The Conservatives and Liberals should come together and create a program that they both agree on.

  31. My research paper is going very well. I have a lot of sources to help back up my argument. I chose to pick the topic of cosmetic surgery in America because it is an increasing trend and women especially are having this procedure done for stupid reasons. They are doing it to fit in with others, because they are influenced by the media, and because they are jealous of other prettier women and want to "out pretty" them. All of the sources I have back up my reasons and all come together as one.

  32. My research paper is pretty interesting, and I actually got the idea from my parents. They know i'm really into investigations and history and stuff, so my research paper is on 2012: will the world really end? I did a lot of research on my topic and I am completely against the world ending in 2012. There are many facts and reasons as to why it won't end and very few as to why it will. Many of the truths make no sense, but people are taking 2012 really seriously. All of the sources I provided backed up each of my reasons.

  33. My research paper is about the approval of coed dorming. This is a very controversial topic. The main problem that i had with this topic was finding a database that i could use. There were not many database's that worked in favor of my topic.

  34. My research topic is on Division I athletes mainly pertaining to Men's Basketball and Football. There is a lot of money made from television contracts and merchandising rights. The NCAA strictly prohibits any compensation to the athletes in order to maintain that they are amateurs. My research paper discusses all the money generated, the poor socioeconomic backgrounds of many of the athletes and the poor graduation rates at these Division I programs. I think that these athletes are victims of indentured servitude and there should be ways to allocate some of the money towards the players.

  35. I have always been raised to believe that everyone is equal no matter what their skin color is or where they come from and it angers me when I see people being treated unfairly because of their background. Recently I learned that the issue of race is a widely debated topic in the scientific and anthropological fields and that many experts argue that race is a social construct and not a biological fact. There is an overwhelming amount of evidence to prove the there is only one human race and that the minor physical differences between members of different races are just that, minor physical differences that are not strong enough to be the basis for different human subspecies.
In my research paper I present the facts that challenge the race concept and argue that they should be taught to children as early as possible and that everyone should become educated about humans being only one human race so that discrimination, racism and bigotry can be combatted and defeated and therefore hate crimes and inequality can be expunged from our society and everyone of every "race" can peacefully coexist. That may be a big goal but anything is possible.

  36. The topic that I chose for my research paper is the legalization of marijuana for medical purposes. So far I have done a lot of research on this particular topic and I am very knowledgeable on this subject because there was a debate about it in my high school. My thesis statement as to why marijuana should be legalized for therapeutic purposes is: Marijuana should be legalized for therapeutic purposes because it helps patients who are under chronic pain and suffering, because marijuana helps enhance the pain medication for the patients, and because marijuana doesn’t lead to overdose. So far the research has been going well with everything but the only thing that has troubled me with this whole assignment is finding relevant database resources that correspond exactly with my three reasons. Other than that I feel as if this research paper was a good experience for writers in this class.
